ADVENTURE REPORT
What a glorious winter’s day last Sunday was !!! It was sunny, had blue skies, calm winds, and was just perfect for a coastal walk. So after a quick caffeine fix, 11 adventurers including one newbie were buzzing, excited and rearing to go.
This walk was a bit different from normal in that Narelle and Di, who live not far away, volunteered and did the recon checks for me and suggested some changes to the version I was going to do and did a few years ago. They did a great job. Thank you very much Ladies. Narelle too, because Di was unable to come on Sunday, led large sections of the walk and so I was able to relax & linger back and mingle & chat.

We started near the new Kurnell Ferry Wharf currently under construction for future public services to La Perouse. It’ll be great when it’s finished and will provide a convenient link for a possible future multiday walking adventure from Palm Beach to Wollongong. But I digress.
The start was near Cook’s Landing place in 1770 and nearby was the grave site of the first European to be buried in Australia, Mr Forby Sutherland. Sound familier? He was a member of Cook’s exploratory voyage. Cook named a nearby peninsula after him.

After taking the obligatory groupshot in front of the whale statues, we headed to the coast and started our southbound coastal journey in ernest. The initial bushy patch opened out onto a fire trail that took us to the coast. Here the vegitation was low, thick and windswept. The track changed to a raised broadwalk path that made the going easy as we meandered south. When it stopped, we continued along the rock shelves high above the ceaseless waves crashing the shore below. The final part was along the beach. All the while the coastal view to our left was just amazing … broad, endless, open, rugged, wild, dramatic, and beautiful.

Along with the usual rock fisherman, we came across a group of kite flyers from Melbourne. They were patiently waiting for the wind to pickup (no thank you) before they could start their serious aerial battles. Amazing the activities and groups you come across.

A picnic lunch was had at “the pipes”, the original location for Sydney’s southern sewage outlet. Fortunately it was now piped 3km out to sea so there were no unpleasant fragrances to speak of.

We joined the beach soon after lunch at a point called Boat Harbour. Apart from the makeshift gypsy looking cottages there, we became pedestrians on the beach amongst the many four wheel drives parked and driving along it.

Our final leg was up and over the dunes and inland and along an undulating trail.
Upon arrival at our destination, we enjoyed some quick refreshments at a local cafe before bidding each other farewell, tired, slightly sun & wind burnt, and happy with our achievement.

Well done Carmel, Carolyn, Chris, Jacquie, Jenny, Lisa, Mary-Blue, Peter, Narelle, and Sue. And again thank you to Di & Narelle for volunteering & enthusiastically doing the recon checks.
Until next time …
Yours in adventure Nick
