ADVENTURE REPORT
Today was our 1st walk for 2025 and NBREA’s 62nd adventure since inception 2 years ago.

19 enthusiastic walkers, including 2 newbies, took it on. 5 met at a cafe and 14 at a Hippo. With the help of the chosen ones and their cars we merged at Canterbury Station, topped up with caffeine, and then headed off.

The route was flat, mainly paved, and followed the wide and majestic Cooks River along it’s meandering course to the coast. As walkers we followed the river and oscillated from side to side following the simple directions of … “if you come to a bridge, cross it”.

8 bridges and 14km later we reached the shores of Botany Bay at Kyeemagh. Now hungry & thirsty we decided to walk a further 1km to a beachside cafe in Brighton Le Sands to share lunch together.

The route was picturesque and green. Points of interest included Mary McKillop Reserve, the old riverside sugarmill & dock, the 2 off-track sections with mud !!! through the golf course, the hand tended market gardens like something out of Asia 1km from Australia’s busiest airport, up close views of Sydney Airport, and of course the river itself, clean & wide, and finally Botany Bay with it’s long windswept sandy beaches.

It was a great day shared with Alex, Barb, Bernadette, BruceS, Carmel, Carolyn, Di, Farhad, George, Jacquie, Jenny, John, Les, Marian, Mark, Mary-Lou, Narelle, and Steve. Great weather; great company; great conversations; great friends; great walk.

Special thanks to Alex, Carmel, & Steve (the choosen ones) for assisting with the car pool shuffle, and to Alex for doing the walk sweep. Thanks too for all your car pool offers.

Until next time …
Yours in adventure Nick

ps: Unfortunately I only took a few photos and none of the beautiful Cooks River 😩.

DETAILS
CHANGES MADE 16 Jan 25. They’re shown in blue.

A pretty & easy 13.5km 12km walk along the Cooks River from Canterbury Station to the shores of Botany Bay at Kyeemagh. The route is very flat, mainly sealed and criss-crosses the river along it’s course.

Bring snacks, sunhat & water. Poles won’t be necessary.

IF YOU’RE COMING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT … please let me know and meet at 8:40am at Oscuro Café tucked under the old building 10 metres uphill from Canterbury Station. Be aware the station is closed for Metro conversion, but there are frequent free bus replacement services from nearby major centres – refer here.

At the end of the walk at Kyeemagh Beach,  fellow walkers should be able to give you a lift to a transport point.

IF YOU’RE COMING BY CAR … meet at 8:15am at the “Hippo” on the corner of Bestic St & The Grand Parade, Kyeemagh. Unrestricted parking can be found in these two streets near this corner. Tap the Meetup Button below for directions.

We’ll then car pool to Canterbury Station where I recommend we park in the vacant block here. We will then rendezvous at Oscuro Café tucked under the old building across the road 10 metres uphill from Canterbury station.

AFTER THE WALK … if you’re interested, we can lunch at the nearby “basic” takeaway place CKs Kyeemagh Bayside, or go onto Brighton Le Sands 2km south for more options. We’ll retrieve the pool cars from Canterbury too.

The plan … depending on your mode of transport, is to either meet at Kyeemagh Beach  and car pool to Canterbury Station, or just meet at the Station. (Let me know in your registration comments.) We’ll then walk back to the beach. Here I’m hoping we can have a swim and get some food possibly at CK’s Kyeemagh Bayside located in the park adjacent to the beach. As for a pre-start cafe, there’s possibly something at the station. There’s nothing open close to Kyeemagh Beach at that time … bring your thermos.

I need to do a recon … to confirm cafe, exact beach end meetup point, and the final parts of the route. If anyone has good local knowledge of options, don’t hesitate to contact me. The recon will happen closer to the date. Details will be updated as necessary. Stay tuned
